As Long As It Sucks

Created collaboratively with Gabriel Poucher in 2018 at Salem Art Works (Salem, NY),  As Long As It Sucks is the self-help book you didn’t know you needed. Inspired by the extensive questionnaire in David Toma’s Guide for Teenagers (a book I serendipitously discovered in the free bin of the local library), we explored topics such as “depression, drugs, suicide, Satanism, self-hatred, and seeking healing through closeness to God.” The result was a chaotic legal pad bricolage that combined felt truth with absurdist pastiche. The appellation was derived from our guiding artistic/literary precept for the project: everything is permissible as long as it sucks. Chronic perfectionism and self-doubt can go to hell.

What people are saying about As Long As It Sucks:

“Never has a book made me feel more conflictingly alive, aroused, and outside my selves. I want the things to not suck but they do, they all do, and here I am with a pseudo-self-help-book-i-didn't-know-i-needed that conjures the inner departure in all of us to let me know about the universe of my being, my being around all of you. I may have been bitter before reading this but now I believe that it is just my coffee, maybe I'll put in the cup at my office labeled, "Dave."
