a collaboration with Gabriel Pouchermixed media on a legal pad/2018


	Created collaboratively with Gabriel Poucher in 2018 at Salem Art Works (Salem, NY),&#38;nbsp; As Long As It Sucks is the self-help book you didn’t know you needed. Inspired by the extensive questionnaire in David Toma’s Guide for Teenagers (a book I serendipitously discovered in the free bin of the local library), we explored topics such as “depression, drugs, suicide, Satanism, self-hatred, and seeking healing through closeness to God.” The result was a chaotic legal pad bricolage that combined felt truth with absurdist pastiche. The appellation was derived from our guiding artistic/literary precept for the project: everything is permissible as long as it sucks. Chronic perfectionism and self-doubt can go to hell.

	Katie Gene Friedman, the newest author published by Portland press, Future Tense Books, will be visiting from Philadelphia to read from her chapbook, Foreign Body.*
She'll be joined by Dena Rash Guzman, author of the new project, Scraps for Doomsday, and Ashley Yang-Thompson, publisher of Wormslut zines and author of the graphic novella, How to be the worst laziest fattest most incontinent piece-of-shit in the world EVER.*In her essay Foreign Body, Katie Gene Friedman takes the reader on an odyssey of gynecological misadventures, exploring what a sexual and reproductive future looks like for her retrofitted body, as she navigates the absurdities of gender roles, religion, and the healthcare system.Katie Gene Friedman is a queer, invisibly disabled high school dropout working in sexual and reproductive health. The product of a Chinese immigrant and a white polygamist from Fort Scott, Kansas, Ashley Yang-Thompson has been a performance artist since the day she was ruthlessly shoved out of the safety of her mother’s womb. Her art has been exhibited at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, the Museum of Moving Image, and the Essex Peabody Museum, as well as numerous national and international spaces. She is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Equity Fellowship and Mass MoCA’s Assets for Artists Grant. Jane Fonda’s Original Workout / “Flex” Factoryart happenings/
2017-2019


	Ever since 2016, I have done Jane Fonda’s Original Workout (the best-selling VHS of all time) almost every day. In an era where women were discouraged from exercising and gyms were dominated by men, Jane Fonda’s Original Workout (1982) was groundbreaking. It popularized fitness for women (as well as a neon spandex fashion craze), and the proceeds supported leftist political organizations. During my residencies at Vermont Studio Center, The Wassaic Project, and Oxbow School of Art, I made Jane Fonda’s Original Workout into a daily happening, and invited residents and staff to participate in this iconic aerobic ritual. In the heyday of Equinox, Class Pass, and the disgustingly remunerative Cult of Health, Jane Fonda’s Original Workout functions as a free, silly, and moderate group workout that only requires a towel. The workout attracted a heterogenous group of residents, including Cheryl R. Riley, who actually did Jane Fonda’s workout with Jane Fonda in the 80’s. In 2019, I was asked to lead Jane Fonda’s Original Workout (advertised as a “queer comedic fitness demo”) at Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria, NY as part of Flux Takeover!

	I made The Coloring Book for Fucked Up Kids for an assignment in my first drawing class with Craig Hill. It tells the story of a Chinese-American girl whose classmates nicknamed her Ting Ting and whose mom killed her pet rabbit and ate it for dinner. It tells the story of love lost in translation, the difficulty of understanding across cultures, and the challenge of tolerating your own family. It tells the story of the lonely, messy, vibrant upbringing of the displaced.
The Coloring Book for Fucked Up Kids was exhibited in multiple dorm rooms at Kenyon College until it vanished, as did the psychedelic tapestries.Phoebe Rotter wrote about for Fucked Up Kids in the compendium, A Celebration of Female Artists at Kenyon College.
